With the decision no. 7 of the Saaremaa Municipal Council on October 21, 2017, the merger of Kihelkonna, Kuressaare, Laimjala, Leisi, Lääne-Saare, Mustjala, Orissaare, Pihtla, Pöide, Salme, Torgu, and Valjala municipalities took effect, forming a new local government unit, Saaremaa municipality.
